What is the need for a laboratory?
The laboratory at Family Doctors Center is an in-house facility dedicated to comprehensive testing and screening. The team performs lab work to test samples of your fluids or tissues for signs of disease or any abnormality. They can also use such tests to make sure that your body systems work properly and that your numbers are in normal ranges. When you get lab testing at Family Doctors Center, the team compares your results to others within your age range and to your own test results from the past. This can give them a better understanding of your ongoing health and any unique health risks that you have. If you’re in ongoing treatment, they can use lab testing to evaluate the results of the treatment and make adjustments when necessary.
What kind of testing happens in the laboratory?
When you come to Family Doctors Center for lab testing, your doctor collects a sample to send to the lab. They might order you to get:
Blood test
Your doctor can get lots of information from a sample of your blood. They might check your blood for signs of an infection, genetic markers for certain diseases, or nutrient levels.
Urinalysis
During a urinalysis, you collect a sample of your urine and place it discreetly into a small doorway. The team takes the sample and can use it to test for drugs, certain proteins, blood, and other substances.
Biopsy
A biopsy is a tissue sample taken from one of many different places on your body, like your skin. The team tests the sample for signs of disease or cancerous growth.
How long does it take to get the results of my lab tests?
The amount of time you’ll wait for your lab test results depends on the type of test that you get and its purpose. Generally, you can expect to get the results of your lab test back within a week, but wait times vary. Some test results are available within days, while others might take more than a week to arrive. Once your lab results are ready, your doctor contacts you to go over them with you. If further evaluation or treatment is needed, they’ll let you know which steps to take next.
