Substance Management Q & A

Break through the cycle of addiction.

What is substance management?

Drug addiction is a significant burden for individuals and families alike, as well as for society as a whole.  At Family Doctors Center, Dr. Greene helps you manage your substance use disorder by taking a medical approach to your care. The goals of your substance management are:

Preventing physical health consequences

Preventing social consequences

Reducing your overall substance use

Reducing the impact of your use on others

Treatment isn’t always simple and doesn’t look the same for everyone.

Dr. Greene will tailor your substance management plan to your specific needs.

What does substance management treat?

Substance management at Family Doctors Center is treatment for illicit drug use, specifically opioid use. Drug addiction is categorized as a chronic disease, and it needs to be treated as such. Once you start using, it is extremely hard to stop because the behavior of taking the drugs becomes compulsive. When you use drugs over a long period of time, they change the way your brain functions. This is why you might start exhibiting unusual or risky behaviors while you’re addicted. As simple as it sounds to just stop using right away, it’s nearly impossible. That’s why most patients need ongoing care with multiple approaches.

What does substance management entail?

At Family Doctors Center, Dr. Greene designs a plan to treat your drug addiction and help you recover. He creates a treatment plan based on the type and extent of addiction that you have. Your treatment may include:

Medications

Medications like Suboxone and Sublocade are made to treat opioid addiction. You take them while you’re in treatment to relieve the symptoms of withdrawal that come with stopping your drug use. Dr. Greene at Family Doctors Center might also recommend medical marijuana for this purpose.

Behavioral counseling

Behavioral counseling can benefit your substance management plan greatly.

Dr. Greene & the staff at Family Doctors Center can give you the mental support you need as you recover. They may also recommend follow-up care like support groups and individual counseling.
